HW-MS03 Microwave Sensor Module | Microwave Radar Motion Sensor | Human Body Motion Detector
HW-MS03 Microwave Sensor Module is a compact microwave radar motion detection module designed for detecting human movement and activity in indoor electronic projects. Unlike conventional PIR sensors, this type of microwave sensor detects motion using electromagnetic waves and Doppler-based sensing, making it useful for smart lighting, security systems, automatic switches, robotics, automation projects, and microcontroller-based applications.
The module is available in compact single-PCB designs and is commonly specified for a wide DC input range, with versions supporting approximately 3.7V to 24V DC or 5V to 24V DC. A typical HW-MS03 provides a digital trigger output and can offer a sensing distance around 10 meters indoors, while the exact operating frequency, output configuration, dimensions, and adjustment range can vary by HW-MS03 version.
For Arduino, ESP32, ESP8266, Raspberry Pi interface projects, relay controllers, automatic lighting, security alarms, and other embedded systems, HW-MS03 can provide a convenient motion-detection input. The module is especially useful where compact size and microwave-based detection are preferred.
Important: The sensor output is intended as a signal output and should not be used to directly drive a high-power load. Use an appropriate transistor, MOSFET, relay module, or driver circuit when controlling lamps, motors, sirens, or other loads.

How HW-MS03 Works:
HW-MS03 uses microwave-based sensing to detect movement. The sensor transmits electromagnetic energy and detects changes in the reflected signal caused by moving objects. This allows it to function as a radar-style motion detector.
The output can then be connected to a microcontroller such as:
HW-MS03 → Arduino / ESP32 / ESP8266 → Relay / LED / Buzzer / Automation System
The Arduino community has also demonstrated HW-MS03 being used as a digital motion input for relay and LED control projects.
HW-MS03 Pin Configuration:
A commonly used interface is:
| Pin | Function |
|---|---|
| VCC | DC power input |
| GND | Ground |
| OUT | Motion detection output |
When motion is detected, the OUT pin changes state according to the specific module's output configuration. Some versions use a high-level trigger, while other versions may be configured differently, so verify the actual board before connecting it to a controller.
Applications:
HW-MS03 Microwave Sensor Module can be used in:
Smart Lighting
Automatically switch lights on when movement is detected.
Security Alarm Systems
Detect movement and trigger a buzzer, siren, or alarm controller.
Arduino Projects
Use it as a motion input for DIY electronics and automation projects.
ESP32 / ESP8266 Projects
Build Wi-Fi-enabled motion detection and smart-home systems.
Robotics
Use microwave motion sensing as an input for autonomous or interactive robots.
Automatic Door Systems
Detect approaching movement and activate a motor controller.
Energy Saving Systems
Turn lighting or appliances on only when activity is detected.
Industrial Automation
Provide movement detection signals to an embedded control system.
Advantages Over Conventional PIR Sensors
Microwave sensors and PIR sensors work differently. PIR sensors detect changes in infrared radiation, whereas microwave sensors detect changes in reflected electromagnetic signals.
HW-MS03 can therefore be useful in applications where microwave-based movement detection is preferred. Some product listings also describe the module as less affected by factors such as temperature, humidity, airflow, dust, light, and darkness than traditional infrared sensing.
However, microwave sensing can also detect movement through some non-metallic materials, so enclosure design and installation position should be considered carefully. Manufacturer information indicates plastic, ceramic, and wooden barriers can allow microwave penetration, while metal enclosures can significantly interfere with sensing.
